Why Retainers Are Important After Braces

Completing orthodontic treatment is a significant milestone,  but it’s not the final step. Once your braces come off or your aligner series is complete, your teeth need time to stabilize in their new positions. Without a retainer, teeth will naturally begin to shift back toward where they started.

This isn’t a flaw in your treatment. It’s simply how teeth and bone respond to change. Wearing your retainer as directed is what protects the results you worked for and it’s one of the most important things you can do after treatment ends.

At Larson Family Orthodontics, we fit every patient with a retainer plan at the end of treatment and take the time to explain exactly how and when to wear it. No guesswork, no confusion, just a clear path to keeping your results long term.

Why Choose Larson Family Orthodontics for Retainers

Retainer Options

Types of Retainers We Offer

Permanent Retainer

A permanent retainer is a thin wire bonded to the tongue side of your front teeth after treatment is complete. Because it stays in place at all times, there is no risk of forgetting to wear it, making it one of the most reliable options for maintaining long-term results.

Permanent retainers do require a little extra attention during your daily hygiene routine. Flossing around the wire takes a bit more care, but we will walk you through exactly how to clean and maintain it at your fitting appointment so it stays effective for years to come.

Hawley Retainer

The Hawley retainer is a traditional removable retainer made from a combination of acrylic and a metal wire that rests along the front of your teeth. Durable and adjustable, Hawley retainers have a long track record and can be a good fit for patients who need a reliable, easy-to-maintain removable option.

Because they are removable, they have no impact on eating or your daily oral hygiene routine. Worn consistently as directed, a Hawley retainer will keep your teeth stable and your results protected.

Clear Retainer

Clear retainers are custom-fitted trays that fit snugly over your teeth, virtually invisible and comfortable to wear. They are a popular choice for patients who want a discreet option that fits seamlessly into daily life.

Like all removable retainers, clear retainers are taken out for eating and brushing.

They should be cleaned daily and stored properly when not in use to maintain their fit and effectiveness over time.

How Long Do You Need to Wear a Retainer?

This is one of the most common questions patients ask after treatment — and the honest answer is: retainers are a long-term commitment.

Here is what most patients can expect:

  • First several months — full-time wear, removing only to eat and brush
  • After the initial period — nights-only wear for most patients
  • Long term — consistent nightly wear indefinitely to maintain results

Teeth can shift at any age, even years after treatment ends. The patients who maintain their results the longest are the ones who treat retainer wear as a permanent habit, not a temporary phase.

At our Office, we will give you a specific wear schedule based on your case during your retainer fitting, not a generic recommendation.

When to Replace Your Retainer

Retainers do not last forever. Knowing when to replace yours helps you avoid the frustration of teeth shifting before you realize there is a problem.

Signs it is time to replace your retainer:

  • It feels loose or no longer fits properly
  • It is cracked, warped, or visibly damaged
  • You have lost it or it has been missing for an extended period
  • Your teeth feel like they have shifted since you last wore it

If your retainer no longer fits, do not try to force it. Contact our office as soon as possible, the longer you wait, the more movement can occur. In many cases we can evaluate whether a new retainer is sufficient or whether additional treatment may be needed.

Frequently Asked Questions About Retainers

What happens if I stop wearing my retainer?

Teeth will gradually shift back toward their original positions. How quickly this happens varies by patient, but it can begin within days of stopping retainer wear. If you have already noticed shifting, contact our office for an evaluation.

My retainer broke or I lost it — what should I do?

Contact us as soon as possible. The sooner we can get you a replacement, the less likely your teeth are to shift significantly. We will evaluate your current alignment and fit you with a new retainer.

Can I get a retainer if I had braces years ago and my teeth have shifted?

It depends on how much movement has occurred. In some cases a new retainer is enough to address minor shifting. In other cases, a short course of treatment may be needed first. We will give you an honest assessment during your consultation.

How do I clean my retainer?

Removable retainers should be cleaned daily with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or retainer cleaner — avoid toothpaste, which can be abrasive. Fixed retainers require careful flossing with a floss threader or water flosser. We will show you exactly how at your fitting.

Does insurance cover retainers?

Many orthodontic insurance plans include at least one set of retainers as part of treatment coverage. We work with most PPO plans and will help you understand your benefits clearly before any costs are incurred.
